Welcome to NextShift Trades and HVAC Foundations for Career Starters. No trade experience is needed. You will explore career pathways and build a foundation for understanding how heating, cooling, and airflow support the spaces we use every day. Start with safety, tools, and measurement. Explore refrigeration-cycle concepts, heating and cooling components, electrical controls, airflow, and ducts. You will also examine maintenance and troubleshooting concepts, learn about EPA Section 608 certification pathways, and prepare for apprenticeship applications and job readiness. Move through the course at your own pace. Start each module with its overview video, then work through the lessons and interactive activities before taking the quiz. Pause, revisit explanations, and use the workbook and career action plan to connect ideas with your goals. There is no need to rush through unfamiliar ideas. Module quizzes require one hundred percent to pass, and the final assessment requires eighty percent. Retakes are available, so keep learning and try again when you are ready. Meet the course completion requirements to earn your certificate of completion. Start with the first module, and build your foundation one step at a time.
What this course covers
A beginner-friendly introduction to HVAC careers, safety, tools, the refrigeration cycle, heating and cooling components, basic electrical and controls, airflow, and preventive maintenance concepts. This is online career-foundations and pre-apprenticeship preparation — it is not technician licensure and not a substitute for supervised, hands-on training. You will never be asked to handle refrigerants, open energized equipment, or perform hazardous procedures.
